Istanbul The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan only continues his election campaign to a limited extent following falling ill. The 69-year-old did not appear in person at the inauguration of a bridge in Adana, southern Turkey, on Friday, according to his program. But he should connect via video from his office. At inaugurations and openings, Erdogan usually promotes his re-election on May 14.

The 69-year-old fell ill on Tuesday evening, a good two weeks before the parliamentary and presidential elections. He first had to interrupt a television interview because of stomach problems, following which he took a break from campaigning.

On Thursday he had a video chat with the Russian President Wladimir Putin shown in which he looked pale. Health Minister Fahrettin Koca had reported that Erdogan had contracted gastroenteritis but was now on the mend.

According to polls, a neck-and-neck race between Erdogan and his strongest challenger, opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, is emerging. So far, Erdogan has been running an intensive election campaign and has usually made three appearances in front of an audience in one day.
