The violent explosion at a fireworks warehouse in southern Thailand has killed at least 12 people and destroyed dozens of homes, officials said. The “Bangkok Post” reported on Sunday, citing a statement from the Narathiwat provincial government. The detonation in Muno district near the Malaysian border occurred on Saturday followingnoon (local time). At first there was talk of nine dead.

The cause of the heavy detonation was therefore probably sparks that were created and jumped during welding work. Almost 1,000 kilograms of gunpowder exploded, provincial governor Sanan Pong-aksorn said at a press conference on Sunday, according to the Bangkok Post. Accordingly, the warehouse was first opened as a grocery store, later the expansion was approved to store goods. The fireworks, however, were probably deposited there without permission. That will now be pursued.

The provincial government also corrected the number of injuries upwards on Sunday. Accordingly, 121 people were injured, 111 were able to leave the hospital. According to the provincial government, the force of the detonation damaged almost 250 houses and completely destroyed another 50.
