They are currently twelve to have responded favorably to the plan proposed by the State. These twelve manufacturers are the first in a list of 50 sites identified by the government as “big consumers” of water and that the State will support to “significantly” reduce their consumption as promised during the presentation of the “water plan”. in March.

This Monday, the Ministers of Ecological Transition, Industry and Biodiversity are going to Balan in Ain, to visit the factory of PVC plastic manufacturer Kem One. This industrialist is one of the 50 who undertakes to do his bit to achieve a 10% reduction in the country’s water withdrawals by 2030. Other sites such as the TotalEnergies refining plant in Donges (Loire -Atlantique), the ArcelorMittal steelworks site in Dunkirk (North) and Florange (Moselle) or even agri-food factories, such as the dairy cooperative of Isigny-Sainte-Mère (Calvados) will also take up this challenge.

Just over 4% of French consumption

In France, industry accounts for 8% of withdrawals and 4% of the country’s water consumption. But “there are territories where an industrialist can represent much larger volumes than the national average”, underlines a government source. To establish this list, the State observed the biggest consumers in territories under pressure and identified the sites where savings were possible.

To help manufacturers, the government will facilitate the financing of studies but also the implementation of solutions. The State could also use its administrative power. In March, Emmanuel Macron had let it be known that he wanted to facilitate the reuse of internally treated water, as demanded in particular by agrifood professionals.
