Twitter announces new free and paid API plans

After a delay that took more than a month, the Twitter finally announced the details of its new APIApplication programming interfaceor application programming interface.”>1which maintains a free (limited) version and also incorporates paid and enterprise plans.

It’s worth noting that previously (with the introduction of API v2 in 2020) Twitter offered multiple tiers for developers, some of which provided access from 500K to 2M tweets per month. Now, developers (and even researchers/enthusiasts) will have to adapt to the restrictions of the free version or subscribe to some of the paid plans to maintain their activities — which already seems to be attracting some dissatisfaction.

Today we are launching our new Twitter API access plans! We are pleased to share more details about our self-service access.

More precisely, the free tier only provides 1,500 publish requests per month, plus access to the Login with Twitter.

The new “basic” level offers a little more: developers can post up to 3,000 tweets per month at the user level and up to 50,000 tweets per month at the application level. It also offers a reading limit of 10,000 tweets per month — which is much less than previously offered — for $100 a month.

Finally, developers wanting access to more data will have to order the enterprise plan, which includes “commercial-grade access that meets your and your customers’ specific needs” and other features. Pricing for this plan has not been disclosed, except that there will be “monthly subscription levels”.

Also according to the platform, the current access levels of the Twitter API — including Standard (v1.1), Essential (v2), Elevated (v2) and Premium — will be discontinued for the next 30 days.

It is worth remembering that the Twitter API saga began when the company announced, in February, that it would close access to the free version after a controversy involving the banning of the main third-party clients. Later, amid heavy criticism, the network announced some initial information about the new plans, but soon said it had delayed the launch.

More information about the new plans is available on this page.
