The European Parliament invites Elon Musk to testify
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has sent a letter to Elon Musk asking him to testify before the EU legislature, her spokesperson said Monday.
The European Parliament does not have the power to compel one of the world’s richest men to appear before it, and his response was not immediately known. Elon Musk, chief executive of the electric car manufacturer Tesla, has caused upheaval and controversy since he bought Twitter in October for 44 billion dollars (40.8 million francs).
Risk of sanctions
After firing half of the company’s staff, reinstating former US President Donald Trump’s account, scrapping a policy against Covid-19 disinformation, banning – and then reinstating – some journalists and briefly blocking references to rival platforms on Twitter, it has caught the attention of policymakers in the United States and Europe.
The European Commission has warned Elon Musk he faces ‘sanctions’ from the EU because of the threat he poses to media freedom. On Monday, he organized a Twitter poll to find out if he should remain CEO of this company. A total of 57.5% of users answered “Yes” to his departure. Twitter’s share price has plunged by a third since it bought the platform.
