Twitter will deactivate long-dormant accounts

the CEOChief executive officeror executive director.”>1 do Twitter, Elon Musk, announced yesterday that the social network will start deactivating accounts that have been without any activity “for several years”. In a tweet, the billionaire warned of possible drops in the number of followers of platform users as a result of this measure.

It is not yet known, however, what criteria the social network will use to determine whether an account should be disabled or not, which can cause some confusion. In principle, it is possible that this measure will make thousands of usernames that were “stuck” in inactive accounts available to others.

We’re cleaning up accounts that haven’t had any activity for several years, so you’ll likely see a drop in your follower count

Another unknown is how this measure will affect the profiles of users who have died, since it might leave several people without the digital records of family members or friends who used to use Twitter. “Historical” posts from profiles that are no longer used may also end up disappearing, depending on how these exclusions are handled.

According to the current policy of use of Twitter, users of the platform must log into their accounts at least once every 30 days to prevent your profile from being deactivated completely. Thus, profiles without any activity, but which are used to follow the social network’s feed, would not be (at least at first) in the scope of the measure.

That way, if you have an account without much activity that you want to keep, it’s time to give it a spin to avoid unwanted deletion.
