ATHENS (AP) — Two migrants died and eight were rescued in Greece on Wednesday following a small boat crashed into rocks amid strong winds on the island of Lesvos, according to local authorities.

The incident occurred near the resort of Thermi, in the east of the island, off the nearby coast of Turkey.

Authorities said a search had been launched for others believed to be on the boat, although it was not yet clear how many had managed to reach land.

Strong winds affected ferry traffic in many places in Greece on Wednesday.

Lesbos remains a transit point for irregular immigration to the European Union despite stepped-up patrols by the Greek coast guard and the EU border protection agency Frontex.
