Schalke 04 missed a home win against VfL Wolfsburg and remains bottom of the table. Two supposed goals of the Royal Blues did not count because of offside positions.
Due to the 0-0 draw against Wolfsburg on Friday (02/10/2023), Schalke is four points behind the relegation place. It was Schalke’s third 0-0 in a row. After three defeats in competitive games, Wolfsburg got a point again for the first time and remains in seventh place for the time being.
Schalke’s team was celebrated by the fans – but the players remained disappointed in the end. “I can’t blame the team”said Schalke’s coach Thomas Reis on ARD radio. “I saw a mentality team. But we won’t give up”
Wolfsburg gets a penalty early – and misses
The game started badly for Schalke at the bottom. Moritz Jenz hit Patrick Wimmer clearly on the foot, referee Benjamin Brand decided on a penalty after looking at the pictures. Wolfsburg’s Maximilian Arnold hit the ball against the left post (9′). Otherwise there were hardly any goal scenes before the break.

“I shot too badly, too accurately. It was a real mess and we could have steered it in the right direction with a penalty.”said Wolfsburg’s captain Arnold. “It’s a lucky point, we didn’t deserve more today.” Wolfsburg coach Niko Kovac criticized his team in the first half “did not take place” have.
Schalke cheers twice, but twice the joy ends quickly

Rice sour over whistled advantage
One scene caused trouble: referee Brand gave a free kick against Wolfsburg’s Mattias Svanberg after a duel with Schalke’s Mehmet Aydin, Schalke got the free kick in midfield. However, the whistle took away the opportunity for Terodde to run freely towards the Wolfsburg goal (90+2).
“The scene was telling”said Rice. “I have no sympathy for that. Every offside position is allowed to pass. At the decisive moment, the whistle is blown. And then you’re told: ‘Yes, that was our mistake.’ And then I get a yellow card for the mistake.”
