Emergency Evacuations Ordered as Segovia Blaze Escalates
Emergency services ordered the preventive evacuation of Los Ángeles de San Rafael and Vegas de Matute in Segovia on Sunday afternoon. A rapidly spreading forest fire had escalated to Level 2 of the potential gravity index.
The evacuation order followed an urgent convening of the emergency coordination center, known as Cecopi. Worsening weather conditions and advancing flames threatened the residential areas directly.
Municipal Transport and Shelter Measures
According to the Ayuntamiento de El Espinar, residents with personal vehicles and alternative accommodations could evacuate independently.
For individuals requiring transportation or physical assistance, municipal authorities deployed designated buses. The local administration also opened the Polideportivo Municipal to serve as a temporary reception and housing center for displaced residents.
Massive Aerial and Ground Response
These emergency measures unfolded as a large-scale firefighting operation continued to battle the blaze on multiple fronts.
The response effort involved 41 deployed units. This total included five helicopters, eight ground crews, six fire engines, and eight helitransported brigades. High ambient temperatures and strong winds complicated containment efforts and drove the erratic behavior of the fire.
Highway Vehicle Fire Triggers Crisis
The incident originated on Saturday afternoon near the Telégrafo area along the AP-6 highway. A vehicle caught fire on the hard shoulder.
The flames quickly jumped from the roadway into the surrounding woodland. That trigger initiated the multi-agency emergency response that now involves both regional and state-level coordination.
