The winners of the Excellence Awards for Research Professionals from the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ) for the year 2023 have been announced. Two members of the Université de Montréal are on the list, namely researcher Étienne Artigau and coordination officer Catherine Blanchard Gougeon.
Awarded since 2015, these prizes recognize the contribution of research professionals to the mobilization of knowledge, the training of the next generation and the support of research groups. Three prizes totaling $5,000 are awarded annually by each of the three Fonds de recherche du Québec.

2nd prize: Etienne Artigau
Holder of a master’s degree in physics and a doctorate in astrophysics, Étienne Artigau is a researcher at the Trottier Institute for research on exoplanets (iREx). Specialized in the design of innovative algorithms for the analysis of the radial velocities of stars with spectrometers observing in the infrared, he notably carried out, during his doctoral studies, work which led to the construction of the infrared camera of the Observatory. of Mont-Mégantic. Before joining the UdeM team in 2009, he worked as an astronomer at the Gemini Observatory in Chile, where he participated in research projects on brown dwarfs, these larger celestial bodies than a planet, but smaller than a star, commonly called aborted stars.
At iREx, he is scientific manager of two instruments used to discover exoplanets by the radial velocity method, NIRPS, located in Chile, and SPIRou, located in the United States. The prolific author, who has co-authored 114 scientific publications, is also part of the team analyzing data from the JWST space telescope. The algorithms he developed during his career have, among other things, made it possible to measure the mass of several super-Earths, exoplanets whose properties are intermediate between those of the Earth and Neptune.

3rd prize (ex aequo): Catherine Blanchard Gougeon
Catherine Blanchard Gougeon has been a coordination officer at the Quebec Interuniversity Center for Social Statistics (CIQSS) since 2014. Holder of a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in information science, she supports more than 450 researchers on a daily basis. in their access to Statistics Canada microdata. The skills she acquired during her studies and her previous jobs allow her today to apply a technological dimension in her strategy for promoting and promoting the scientific spin-offs of research. Since her arrival at the QICSS, she has completed several mandates, including the development of the organization’s first plan in terms of equity, diversity and inclusion. She also coordinated nine editions of the symposium Succession Excellencewhere student work in the field of social and health statistics is highlighted.
Recognizing the importance of research for the advancement of society, she always seeks to establish links between the scientific community and the academic partners of the QICSS. It frequently makes recommendations aimed at improving the procedures for accessing data and annually lists the publications resulting from more than 250 research projects.
