Tyler Switalski and Other Local Athletes Shine in College Sports: A Recap of Standout Performances

Tyler Switalski has been a busy pitcher in his first season at West Virginia.

A Waynesburg native, Switalski transferred to WVU this season after two years at Gardner-Webb. The lefthander has started nine games for the Mountaineers and has a 1-1 record. The win came against Charlotte, when he tossed 4 2/3 innings and gave up one run while striking out five.

Switalski has started three Big 12 games, against Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Kansas.

Among Switalski’s other starts was WVU’s 6-3 win Tuesday over visiting Pitt. Switalski threw 3⅔ scoreless innings and struck out three.

In basketball

Maddie Webber ended her first season at Villanova as the Wildcats’ third-leading scorer despite starting only 11 games.

A freshman from South Fayette and the Observer-Reporter Girls Basketball Player of the Year in 2023, Webber averaged 7.7 points and 2.7 rebounds per game for Villanova, which finished with a 22-13 record and was the runner-up in the season-ending WBIT.

Webber’s highest-scoring game of the season was a 20-point performance against Providence. She had 11 games of double-digit scoring.

In track and field

Duquesne senior Hannah Seitzingera senior from Belle Vernon, is second in the Atlantic 10 Conference in both the 400-meter dash (55.43) and the 800-meter run (2:08.40).

Seitzinger won the 400 meters at the Dalton Ebanks Invitational, hosted by George Mason University, with the 55.43, which bested a field of 45 runners.

Seitzinger was also part of the Dukes’ 1,600-meter relay team that produced the third-fastest time (3:50.25) in the A-10 this season at the George Mason meet.

Jimmy Kartsonasa Venetia native, was part of John Carroll’s 400-meter relay team that set the stadium record at the Wooster Invitational last weekend.

The Blue Streaks’ team of Cameron Klauke, Garrett Clarke, Dustin Horner and Kartsonas ran 41.05. The same team also won the 400 relay at the Bob Kahn Invitation at Oberlin with a time of 41.08.

Kartsonas, a junior and a Peters Township graduate, also placed ninth in the 200 meters at Wooster with a time of 22.02.

Washington & Jefferson senior Jadyn Hartner won the 400-meter hurdles last Saturday at the Westminster Invitational with a personal-best time of 1:05.02. Hartner’s time puts her as 23rd fastest in NCAA Division III and ranks the Fort Cherry graduate first among PAC competitors in the event. Hartner bested a field of 28 competitors in her win.

In golf

Senior Morgan Byers helped the Westminster women’s team to a second-place finish in the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational last week in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.

Byers, a Venetia resident and Peters Township graduate, tied for fifth place overall with a two-day total of 158 over the Meadows Course at the Greenbrier Resort. Byers opened the tournament with a round of 82 followed by a closing round of 76 that saw her climb four spots on the leaderboard.

In softball

Saint Francis (Pa.) junior first baseman Olivia Dish was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week for April 1-7.

Ulam, a Canonsburg resident and Canon-McMillan graduate, went 6-for-12 with two runs, two doubles and six RBI in Saint Francis’ series sweep over Central Connecticut. Ulam did her most damage in the third game of the series when she hit two doubles and had four RBI in a 16-1 rout of the Blue Devils. She recorded two hits in each game of the series.

Ulam is batting .336 for the season with a team-high 15 doubles, five home runs and 34 RBI. The 15 doubles rank first in the conference and ninth in the nation.

Through the first 12 conference games, Ulam is 21-for-42 with 11 runs, six doubles, three home runs and 18 RBI – all marks that pace the Red Flash.

Waynesburg native Kylee Goodman is the leading hitter for Glenville State.

A sophomore third baseman, Goodman is batting .375 with six doubles, two home runs and a .444 on-base percentage.

Goodman has 11 multi-hit games in 31 games. She was 3-for-3 against West Virginia State and 3-for-4 against Seton Hill.

Senior first baseman Ella Brookman recently broke one Waynesburg University career record and tied another.

Brookman, a Chartiers-Houston graduate, collected career RBI No. 107 against Geneva to break the previous program record of 106 held by Amanda Baughman (Washington High School). With her run-scoring double, Brookman also tied the Waynesburg career hits record of 152 held by Brin Hunter (McGuffey).

In baseball

Seton Hill senior first baseman Elijah Snider was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week for April 1-7.

Snider, a South Fayette graduate and Bridgeville native, earned the award for his performance in the four game set against Pitt Johnstown.

Snider led the Griffins to a sweep of UPJ by hitting .600 (6-for-10). He scored five runs, hit two home runs and drove in seven. He also drew two walks and was hit by a pitch. Snider is batting .391 for the season.

Waynesburg junior catcher Seth Burgdolt was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week for April 1-7.

A Taylorstown native and McGuffey graduate, Burgdolt batted .400 (6-for-12) for the week as the Yellow Jackets went 3-0. He reached base three times with a single and two walks in a win over Chatham, then hit a double in the opening game of a doubleheader against Bethany. In the nightcap, Burgdolt was part of a late rally that saw Waynesburg overcome a 7-1 deficit. He started the comeback in the eighth inning with a solo home run and completed the rally in the ninth with a three-run walk-off homer. Burgdolt went 4-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI in the game.

Burgdolt entered this weekend batting .338 with three home runs and 18 RBI in 23 games. He also has thrown out 11 of 24 (46 percent) potential base stealers.
