Typhoon Kanun wreaks havoc in Okinawa: One dead, dozens injured, and power outages affect 220,000 households

Local media such as Kyodo News reported on the 2nd that one person died and at least 35 people were injured due to strong winds and heavy rain in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, which was affected by Typhoon No. 6 ‘Kanun’.

The deceased was a 90-year-old man who was buried under a garage that collapsed the previous day (1st) due to strong winds and was transported to the hospital, but lost his life.

Okinawa authorities said three of the injured were in critical condition.

In addition, power supply to a total of 220,000 households was temporarily cut off that afternoon.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, Typhoon Kanun will stay near Okinawa in the East China Sea and gradually move to the sea about 230 km south-southeast of Kagoshima on the 7th.

The Japan Meteorological Agency predicted that Kanun would turn northeast around 9 am on the 4th, and the US Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) predicted that it would turn northeast after the 3rd and head for the southern seas of Japan.

The intensity of Kanun was predicted to remain ‘very strong’ until the 4th and then lower to ‘strong’.
