Tyrolean State Theater with premiere of Lazar and Haas Opera

The director of the Tyrolean State Theater, Irene Girkinger, who has been in office since September 2023, wants to continue to move towards “contemporaryness” and “contemporary themes” in the 2024/25 season. In the 34 productions, ten of which are premieres, “migration and climate change,” among other things, will play important roles, said Girkinger. The program includes the new opera “Liebesgesang” by Georg Friedrich Haas and Maria Lazar’s play “Die Hölle auf Erden”.

Girkinger explained on Thursday at a press conference during the program presentation in Innsbruck that other aspects were also very important to her – in addition to the commitment to contemporaneity that can be seen in such pieces: “We have four cross-disciplinary productions on the program.” The director emphasized that this was “unique” in this form and intensity in Austria. Under her artistic aegis there are not pieces and works that respond to the important questions of the present and work across disciplines, but also “entertainment” and lighter fare. “In this matter, the range is simply important to me,” explained the Upper Austrian native explained her program.

Girkinger obviously relies on continuity and builds on her previous work and actions. There will once again be a collaboration – also a hobby of hers – with the “Klanglaufen Schwaz”, a festival for new music in the Tyrolean lowlands. The opera by Haas, for which the libretto comes from the Tyrolean writer Händl Klaus, is based on this collaboration. It will premiere on May 31st in Bern, followed by the Austrian premiere in Tyrol at the start of the season on September 13th. The next day is the premiere of “Desire”, a play by Lisa Wentz.

The piece “Hell on Earth” by Maria Lazar, which premieres on September 28th, is also contemporary to a certain extent. It’s about something that is currently very contemporary: a war that threatens to destroy everything. Finally, the rock musical “Hair”, which will also be performed in the coming season, can be seen as a somewhat lighter contrast.

The State Theater’s new dance company is also being put to good use. In four productions, including “The Room” by Caroline Finn and “Beben” by Marcel Leemann, which features live music by the Austrian singer-songwriter Oskar Haag. One thing applies: “Show the variety of forms in dance,” as Girkinger put it.

As a further supporting pillar, the Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra (TSOI) will also perform at eight concerts. The program includes, among other things, the 2nd Symphony by Johannes Brahms and music by Jean Sibeluis. There is also music in the “Haus der Musik”, which is also part of the Tyrolean State Theater. There, people devote themselves to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach in a variety of ways.

However, Markus Lutz, commercial director of the Tyrolean State Theater, gave the overall demanding program a good chance of being popular with the audience. “We want to maintain the capacity utilization of last season, which was around 89 percent,” he emphasized. In general, things “got off to a good start” under Girkinger’s neo-directorship, although there was a decline in subscribers of around nine percent. “But that is normal when there is a change in director and is a completely justifiable measure,” said Lutz.
