According to Toledoblade, the crash took place just before 11 a.m. at Detroit and Central avenues. Rep. Kaptur, 80, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Kegan Zimmerman, 26, her campaign manager, while heading to a church service when another vehicle struck them. Both Rep. Kaptur and Mr. Zimmerman sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center, as reported by 13abc.com.
Hit-and-Run Investigation and At-Large Suspect
Toledo Police Department officials described the incident as a hit-and-run, or “hit-skip” crash, noting that the driver believed to be at fault fled the scene on foot. Toledo Police Chief Michael Troendle stated that investigators believe weather was a factor in the collision, pointing out that Toledo experienced heavy rain showers in the hours leading up to the accident, according to the National Weather Service.
Accident reconstructionists were deployed to the scene to conduct measurements and determine the exact sequence of events. Chief Troendle stated that investigators have made significant progress in identifying the suspect, though authorities have not released a full description of the individual or specific details regarding ongoing leads.
