A Historic Milestone at the Peacock Theater
The 36th annual MusiCares benefit gala is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 5, 2027. The event shifts locations from the Los Angeles Convention Center to the nearby Peacock Theater, which holds a standard maximum seating capacity of 7,100. This celebration takes place two nights prior to the 2027 Grammy Awards at the nearby Crypto.com Arena.
By accepting this distinction, U2 joins an elite roster of group honorees that includes Fleetwood Mac in 2018, Aerosmith in 2020, and the Grateful Dead in 2025. Furthermore, this announcement carries a unique personal milestone.
Five Decades of Music and Global Activism
The band members met in a Dublin high school in 1976, launching a remarkable 50-year collaborative run that has yielded 22 Grammy Awards—more than any other group or duo—alongside over 170 million albums sold worldwide. They remain the only act in Grammy history to win two awards in each of the three highest-profile categories: album of the year, record of the year, and song of the year.
Alongside their artistic legacy, U2 has maintained a steady commitment to global activism. Even before securing a record deal, the band campaigned against apartheid in South Africa. In 2005, Amnesty International awarded them the Ambassador of Conscience Award.
Individually and collectively, the members have driven significant philanthropic initiatives. Bono co-founded the advocacy sister organizations ONE and (RED) to fight extreme poverty and AIDS, playing a vital role in persuading President Bush to create PEPFAR, an initiative credited with saving 26 million lives. The Edge co-founded Music Rising in 2005 following Hurricane Katrina to replace instruments and equipment for disaster-affected schools and musicians. Adam Clayton, who received the MusiCares Stevie Ray Vaughan Award in 2017, has advocated for addiction recovery and mental health, supporting Ireland’s Walk in My Shoes initiative. Larry Mullen Jr. has raised awareness for dyslexia and learning differences through his work producing the documentary “Left Behind.”
A New Experience for Fans and Industry Lifelines
In a joint statement, the band members reflected on the honor and the unseen crews that keep the music industry running. “We are huge fans of MusiCares and the lifelines they provide across the incredible pool of talent that is the music industry,” the members of U2 stated. “We’ve been recording and touring for 50 years because of that pool, from producers and engineers to carpenters and riggers.”
For the 2027 ceremony, MusiCares is breaking tradition by offering individual theater seats for purchase alongside traditional gala dinner tables, opening the tribute concert portion of the evening to a wider audience. The annual gala raises critical funds for MusiCares programs, which offer health and wellness services, addiction recovery, mental health support, preventive care, disaster relief, and financial assistance for music professionals.
