SpaceX’s Starlink has secured a 10-year General Satellite Services Licence from the United Arab Emirates, bringing high-speed satellite broadband to individuals, businesses, and government entities across the country, according to reports from Muslim Network TV and Khaleej Times. The authorization also extends specialized connectivity directly to the maritime and aviation sectors.
Building a Low-Earth Orbit Infrastructure Layer
Issued by the Telecommunications And Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA), the decade-long license permits the establishment, operation, and management of a public satellite telecommunications network. This integration embeds a low-Earth orbit space-based layer straight into the nation’s digital ecosystem, functioning right alongside existing terrestrial fiber-optic and 5G networks.
The framework is designed to diversify internet access options while reinforcing the resilience, readiness, and continuity of the national network across various operational conditions. By expanding these links, the country intends to back critical industries dependent on uninterrupted data streams.
Strengthening Maritime, Aviation, and Energy Networks
The satellite capabilities target vital national pillars, spanning maritime and aviation transport, energy, logistics, and emergency response. TDRA Director-General Majed Sultan Al Mesmar emphasized the weight of the new authorization for the nation’s communications landscape.
“This license represents a significant addition to the UAE’s telecommunications sector and reflects the country’s commitment to adopting advanced technologies and fostering a flexible regulatory environment that supports innovation and investment,” Al Mesmar stated.
He noted that advanced satellite services will expand connectivity choices and protect business continuity.

The rollout ties directly into broader national benchmarks, advancing the objectives of the UAE Digital Agenda and the “We the UAE 2031” vision. By encouraging competition and maintaining flexibility, the TDRA anticipates higher service quality and better customer experiences.
