The United Arab Emirates is calling to place water at the forefront of global economic and investment priorities. As Abu Dhabi prepares to host the United Nations Water Conference in December 2026, alongside co-host Senegal, the nation is emphasizing the importance of moving from dialogue to implementation and linking investment with practical solutions. This summit aims to make water a global economic and investment priority, proving that water is a fundamental pillar for all aspects of development and economic activity.
Diplomatic efforts are already underway across the region to secure high-level international commitment for the upcoming summit. According to state media reports from Emirates News Agency (WAM), UAE leadership has dispatched formal written invitations to regional heads of state. President Mohamed bin Zayed sent a written message to the Emir of Kuwait, extending an official invitation to the gathering. A similar diplomatic missive was delivered to the Emir of Qatar, reinforcing the commitment to the conference.
Bridging the Funding Gap in Liquid Infrastructure
Behind the high-level diplomacy lies a stark economic reality: governments alone cannot meet the volume of investments required to build resilient water systems worldwide. During a press briefing at the National Media Authority, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability Abdullah Balalaa laid out the fundamental premise of the 2026 conference. Balalaa emphasized that water is a primary driver of economic growth and development, linking industrial production, technology, and global supply chains.
“In fact, nearly every good and service that drives our economies relies on reliable access to water,” Balalaa stated during the briefing. “If we are serious about implementation, we must be equally serious about financing. Investment in water is an investment in humanity.”
Balalaa explicitly called on commercial banks, investors, development finance institutions, multilateral development banks, and philanthropic organizations to recognize water as an economic and investment priority.
Interactive Investment Dialogues and the Path to Sustainable Development Goal 6
The 2026 UN Water Conference in Abu Dhabi is designed to move from dialogue to implementation. A consensus among UN member states has established the “Investments for Water” dialogue—the sixth interactive dialogue on the agenda. For the first time in a UN water conference, a dedicated dialogue will focus on mobilizing the funding, technology, innovation, and capacities necessary to achieve progress on a large scale and accelerate Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6).
By bringing governments, the private sector, investors, and innovators into interactive dialogues and spaces, the UAE aims to enhance opportunities for building more sustainable and resilient water systems that achieve a tangible impact on human life.
