The United Arab Emirates (UAE) national soccer team, newly launched under coach Paulo Bento, defeated Costa Rica from the first game.
UAE (72nd in FIFA rankings), led by Coach Bento, defeated Costa Rica (46th) 4-1 in a friendly match held at Stadion Maksimir in Zagreb, Croatia on the 13th (Korean time).
Yahya Gasani became the number one contributor to the victory, scoring in the 16th minute of the first half and the 8th minute of the second half. Naturalized Brazilian players Kaiu Canedo Cogea and Ali Salmin also scored goals in the 23rd and 38th minutes of the first half. Costa Rica was only able to make up for a goal scored by defender Julio Cascante in the 19th minute of the second half.
This game is the UAE coaching debut for coach Bento, who left Korea after failing to agree on a contract renewal with the Korea Football Association. Coach Bento, who left his name as Korea’s longest-serving coach in a single term, led Korea to advance to the round of 16 of the away World Cup for the first time in 12 years at the Qatar World Cup.
After completing his tour with Korea, Coach Bento will now lead the UAE to the 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup to be held in Qatar from January to February next year. Bentoho UAE, which competes with Iran, Palestine, and Hong Kong in Group C, may encounter Korea as an enemy in some cases.
