Dubai: UAE to start cloud seeding to solve rain shortage The National Meteorological Center has announced that it has decided to conduct 300 cloud seeding missions this year.

Artificial rainfall is part of efforts to prevent climate change, including global warming, from affecting the Gulf region.

Cloud seeding using airplanes has been the method followed by the UAE for rainfall since the 1990s. Annual rainfall in the UAE is usually less than 100 mm everywhere.

Heavy rainfall is rare here. Hence water sources are also less in the country. The sea water is purified and used here for various purposes. Meanwhile, cloud seeding is being done to ensure water availability.

Cloud seeding is the process of spotting rain-prone clouds and spraying rain chemicals into the clouds. Cloud seeding is done by flying up to 25,000 feet in small planes.

Cloud seeding should be done in clouds with at least 50 percent chance of rain. With this, the chance of getting rain from such clouds will become 75 percent.
