The rollout marks a significant expansion of Avride’s footprint in the city, where the company has already deployed sidewalk robots to handle deliveries for Uber Eats.
Scaling the Hybrid Network Architecture
The path to autonomous deployment requires careful infrastructural choreography. Avride, which operates under parent company Nebius Group—formerly known as Yandex NV prior to its 2024 restructuring—is initially managing its own vehicle fleet in Dallas. However, the operational blueprint mirrors Uber’s broader integration strategies seen with partners like Waymo in cities such as Austin, Atlanta, and Phoenix.
Under this operational model, Uber steps in to handle day-to-day fleet logistics. This encompasses vehicle cleaning, maintenance, physical inspections, depot management, and charging infrastructure. Meanwhile, Avride oversees ongoing vehicle testing and its proprietary autonomous driving software stack.
Users requesting standard rides through the Uber app—specifically selecting UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric—may be matched with an Avride robotaxi at no additional cost. Matched riders receive an app notification and retain the explicit option to accept the automated ride or manually switch to a human-driven alternative.
Safety Operators and the Roadmap to Driverless Scaling
True autonomous scaling remains an incremental engineering challenge. At launch, the Avride fleet in Dallas operates with an on-board human safety operator sitting behind the wheel to monitor system telemetry and handle edge cases. Fully driverless operations, which remove the human safety driver entirely, are slated to begin at a future date as validation data accumulates.

Safety parameters dictate that any autonomous vehicle integrated into the Uber network must comply with rigorous safety guidelines. If a passenger requires assistance during a trip, end-to-end rider support is accessible directly through the Uber app. Riders eager to experience the technology can also adjust their matching preferences by opting into the Ride Preferences section within their Uber app settings.
Broader Industry Dealmaking and Delivery Integration
This Dallas robotaxi deployment arrives on the heels of aggressive platform expansion. Uber has locked in roughly 20 partnerships across freight, delivery, and robotaxi segments with various autonomous vehicle firms. Beyond high-profile ventures with Waymo and China-based WeRide in international markets like Abu Dhabi and Riyadh, Uber has steadily woven Avride into its multi-vertical strategy.

In October 2024, Uber struck a multi-year commercial agreement with Avride. Within months, Avride’s compact sidewalk robots began handling food deliveries via Uber Eats in Austin, Dallas, and Jersey City. This autumn, those ties deepened further when Avride secured $375 million in strategic investments and commercial commitments shared between Uber and Nebius.
While sidewalk delivery units serve high-density pedestrian corridors, the robotaxi initiative carries much higher economic and technical stakes.
