Uber Launches New York Taxi, Eyes One-Stop App – WSJ

One of the easiest ways to know where a car is going is to see where its drivers have been.

Uber Technologies Inc. has struck a deal to list all New York City taxis on its app, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. This will not be the only partnership. Uber said at its investor day last month that it aims to have all the world’s taxis online on its app by 2025.

Uber is looking to increase its driver supply in the face of a recovery in demand, and some see the news as a solution to the problem. The agreement will add regarding 14,000 taxis, which will certainly help address the imbalance that exists. And, in the face of New York City’s cap on ride-hailing drivers, the move also allows Uber to bypass the rule to boost driver supply. However, Uber said its driver supply in New York City is the highest since the outbreak. Others see it as an effort to make friends with rivals: Uber listed taxis in its public offering filing as one of its three main competitors, along with private cars and public transit vehicles.
