Jill Hazelbaker Leaves Uber for OpenAI Communications Role
Uber Technologies Inc. president and chief corporate affairs officer Jill Hazelbaker is departing the ridesharing company to join OpenAI as its chief corporate affairs officer, overseeing global communications and corporate positioning, kr.investing.com reported on Tuesday.
From Silicon Valley Giants to Mobility and AI
Hazelbaker joined Uber in 2015 after holding communications positions at Snapchat Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google. She initially led policy and communications during the early regime of co-founder and former chief executive officer Travis Kalanick.
Following Kalanick’s departure, Hazelbaker served as a senior advisor to current CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. She climbed to one of the company’s highest executive positions. Last May, Uber promoted her to president and chief corporate affairs officer, expanding her portfolio to oversee human resources and real estate operations as well.
Internal Restructuring and Executive Departures at Uber
Roughly a month after securing her promotion, Hazelbaker initiated a structural overhaul aimed at streamlining operations. She announced a 23 percent reduction in headcount within Uber’s human resources department. The company subsequently rolled out a broader workforce reduction, cutting 10 percent of its total personnel in an explicit effort to dismantle corporate bureaucracy.
Hazelbaker’s exit coincides with a broader exodus of long-serving executives from Uber. Sarfraz Maredia, the global head of autonomous mobility and delivery operations, is scheduled to depart the company at the end of this month following more than 12 years of service. Susan Anderson, who previously led the delivery business, left the company last June after an approximately ten-year tenure.
