Ubisoft is deleting “inactive” accounts and blocking access to purchased games

Update (07/23/2023) – GS

In December 2021we discovered that a user had his Ubisoft Connect account deleted after not logging in for about a year, which caused him to lose access to all the games he purchased on the platform.

At the time, Ubisoft revealed that it only performs deactivation on accounts that remain inactive for 4 years and that any account that has purchases cannot be closed, but it seems that the company’s internal rules have changed.

According to some users on Twitter, they received an email from Ubisoft advising them that if they didn’t click on a link in said email, which would stop the account suspension, the account, including all purchased games, would become inaccessible after a certain period.

In response, Ubisoft’s support Twitter wrote: “We just wanted to let you know that you can avoid account termination by logging into your account within 30 days (from receipt of the email in the picture) and selecting the Cancel Account Termination link contained in the email.”

When previously asked about this matter, Ubisoft stated that due to GDPR regulations, the company is required to “terminate inactive accounts to comply with local data protection legislation”.

This is only if we have strong reason to believe that the account in question will remain unused.

The email further highlighted issues related to DRM and digital gaming. In a digital ecosystem, it is completely up to the company when or how it wants to close an account, without much choice for consumers.

He also points out that should a publisher like Ubisoft, which publishes many digital-only titles, decide to pull those titles from sale, having them on your digital account is not a completely reliable way to preserve them, as accounts can be quickly terminated.

Do you think there is any alternative to these problems?

Be careful! Ubisoft may delete inactive accounts on its platform

Like several game publishers, Ubifot also has its own platform, where it sells its games. Occasionally, the service gives away some free titles, as a way to attract new customers, but if you’re one of those who only redeem and are always inactive, you better watch out.

In a report to PCWorld, in 2020, a player decided to sell his PC and stop playing, when he felt that he was spending too much time on it and that his health was being affected.

However, about a year later, he decided to buy a new PC and start playing again, only to find that his Ubisoft account was closed and that he had lost access to the games he bought there. Games purchased from other stores were available, but titles like Rainbow Six or games from the Assassin’s Creed saga were not.

Ubisoft responded that only accounts that remain inactive for 4 years are marked for inactivity deactivation and that any account that has purchases cannot be terminated. What happened to the player above could be a mistake and not a rule of the platform.

Even with this possible error, the account was in fact closed and the user even shared an email sent by Ubisoft, where he is notified that he has been inactive for over a year and that his account could be closed.
