What is the new format of the Champions League?

The biggest change is to the group stage, which will become a 36-team league stage. Each team faces eight different teams (four home, four away). The top eight in the general classification qualify directly for the round of 16. The teams ranked ninth to twenty-fourth will compete in the play-offs for the knockout stage, the winners of which will advance to the round of 16. The competition then follows a knockout format.
