UEFA Euro ladies: the English on the roof of Europe at home at Wembley – rts.ch

Wembley is no longer a cursed stadium for English football. A year after the men’s failure in the Euro final against Italy, the women have won the Holy Grail.

England have won the Women’s Euro for the first time in their history. They won 2-1 after extra time against Germany in a final watched by more than 87,192 spectators. The winning goal was scored by substitute Chloe Kelly in the 110th minute. The Manchester City player was able to push the ball into the net after a corner which had been saved by the side Lucy Bronze.

Huge popular fervor

The Germans probably did not deserve to experience such an outcome. Deprived at the last minute of their best player and captain Alexandra Popp, victim of a muscle injury during the warm-up, the players of Martina Voss-Tecklenburg showed extreme bravery. They conceded the opener in the 62nd minute on a break concluded by Ella Toone when they had taken control in this final. Lina Magull’s 79th-minute equalizer was only fair.

Carried by an immense popular fervor, England owes its victory to a strength of character which sometimes makes it possible to overthrow mountains. Before this final, the English had already been pushed to their limits in the quarter-finals by Spain. They had qualified almost by miracle against La Roja.
