Derek Phillips, a third-year student and the mellophone section leader for the Hawkeye Marching Band, suffered a medical emergency just before his ensemble was scheduled to take the field for the halftime show on Sept. 5, 2026. Game-time temperatures reached 90 degrees Fahrenheit, pushing heat indexes above 100 degrees in what KCRG reported was the fourth-hottest football game in Iowa history.
Intensive Care Efforts and the Decision to Remove Life Support
Following his collapse in the heat, Phillips was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit at the University of Iowa Hospital. Medical personnel made extraordinary efforts to treat him, but tests revealed that the damage to his brain was too severe.

Ahead of the game, the university issued alerts allowing fans to bring in water bottles, wear light clothing, and adjust schedules for other campus athletic events. KWQC reported that the Hawkeye Marching Band canceled its scheduled halftime performance due to the oppressive conditions, though the ensemble and spirit squads did perform their pregame routines dressed in shorts and T-shirts after opting out of heavy wool uniforms.
