British consumer prices rose by 6.8 percent in July. Inflation was therefore lower than in June (7.9 percent), but still much higher than the target of 2 percent.

In October last year, British inflation was still over 11 percent. Since then, the percentage has been falling little by little. But at 6.8 percent, the figure is still much higher than desired.

Like the European Union and the United States, the British government and central bank aim for 2 percent inflation.

Core inflation in the United Kingdom remained at 6.9 percent in July, while a small decline was expected. This percentage does not include the strongly seasonally dependent prices of food and energy.

When aiming for lower inflation, the Bank of England mainly takes core inflation into account.
