UK Police Arrest 12 After A66 Crash That Killed Seven, Including Two Officers

British police investigating a multi-vehicle collision on the A66 in northeast England that killed seven people—including two police officers—have arrested 12 individuals in connection with organised criminal activity, according to statements released on Monday, August 24. Cleveland Police confirmed the arrests following a fast-moving inquiry across the Teesside area.

The incident occurred over the weekend when Cleveland Police received prior reports of two cars being driven dangerously in the Middlesbrough area. According to police accounts, one of the vehicles was seen ramming properties. Both cars operated using cloned number plates in a bid to evade detection.

The situation escalated rapidly when one of the suspect vehicles drove the wrong way down a major road. It subsequently crashed head-on into a police armed response vehicle. The impact killed all five occupants of the suspect car and the two police officers inside the response unit. Investigators later confirmed that four of the five occupants in the fleeing vehicle possessed previous criminal convictions.

Assistant Chief Constable Wayne Fox noted that the subsequent operation has been complex.

“This has been a fast-moving and complex investigation, with significant links to serious and organised criminal activity,” said Assistant Chief Constable Wayne Fox in a public statement.
