Leading industry figures have cautioned that the United Kingdom risks falling behind in the global artificial intelligence race unless it accelerates upgrades to its telecommunications infrastructure. As artificial intelligence becomes deeply integrated into everyday life, mounting concerns over planning delays and the slow expansion of advanced 5G networks threaten to leave Britain struggling to handle the enormous increase in data traffic.
Beyond the Datacentre: The Hidden Infrastructure Bottleneck
The global race for artificial intelligence supremacy has largely focused on constructing massive datacentres capable of supplying the vast computing power required to train and operate sophisticated AI models. These facilities demand substantial supplies of electricity and water, particularly for cooling systems. Yet, industry leaders point out that another critical element of the AI infrastructure challenge receives considerably less attention: the telecommunications networks that connect consumers and businesses to AI-powered services.
As artificial intelligence embeds itself into smartphones, vehicles, workplace systems, and everyday connected devices, mobile and broadband networks must carry significantly greater volumes of data. Telecommunications executives fear that existing UK infrastructure may not upgrade quickly enough to accommodate this incoming demand.
While Britain has made considerable progress in improving fixed broadband infrastructure through the expansion of full-fibre networks by Openreach and other providers, the mobile network situation remains concerning. Recent analysis by consumer organization Which?, utilizing data from Opensignal, highlights that the UK’s mobile coverage performs poorly compared with other developed nations.
Where Britain Ranks Globally in Mobile Performance
The consumer group’s findings place the UK behind all 27 European Union member states and every other member of the Group of Seven (G7) nations in terms of mobile coverage. The analysis also positions the UK 57th globally for overall network performance, 70th for download speeds, and 55th for the reliable network quality necessary for video calls, streaming, and online gaming.

VodafoneThree networks director Andrea Donà characterized the situation as a major worry for the technological trajectory of the nation. He argued that if networks already struggle to provide consistently strong performance for today’s digital services, the pressure could become much greater once large-scale AI usage becomes normal.
Illustrating the scale of the challenge, Donà compared the potential strain to the loss of mobile signal experienced when large crowds gather at major public events. Concerts at Wembley, the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, and rugby matches at Twickenham place extraordinary pressure on mobile networks as thousands of people connect simultaneously. He warned that these temporary congestion periods offer an indication of what networks could face more frequently in an AI-driven economy, with persistent pressure generated by millions of users and devices.
The Urgency of Network Capacity for Economic Competitiveness
Another senior telecommunications executive noted that the connection between artificial intelligence and network capacity remains in its early stages. However, they cautioned that the issue could eventually become a matter of national competitiveness, echoing past concerns over Britain’s slower rollout of full-fibre broadband.

With artificial intelligence projected to integrate increasingly into a broad range of consumer and business devices over the next two to three years, the window to modernize mobile infrastructure is narrowing. Without faster networks, low latency, and high bandwidth—essential elements for applications ranging from autonomous vehicles to real-time translation—the UK’s broader economic and technological ambitions face constraints.
