UK sports secretary urges to keep transgender people out of women’s tournaments: ‘It’s a difficult and emotional issue, but it’s been avoided for too long’ – Aquatics

UK Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Minister Nadine Dorris has supported the International Swimming Federation’s (FINA) policy on transgender athletes.

Former FINA tightened rules for the admission of transgender people to women’s competitions and announced plans to create an open category for them.

“I held meetings with sports leaders to discuss the admission of transgender people. This is a difficult and emotional question, but it has been avoided for too long. We can’t pretend that gender doesn’t affect performance in sports.

Asking women and girls to compete with those who are biologically male is inherently unfair. I’ve made my position very clear: I expect sports organizations to have a policy that women’s competitions remain for those who are born a woman.

We need to do this in a way that provides protection and empathy for all athletes, including the creation of open categories,” said Dorris.
