Some UK supermarkets have limited the number of tomatoes, peppers or cucumbers that can be purchased. Other supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s, Lidl, Waitrose and M&S have not yet taken such measures which result from the reduction in exports of tomatoes and other vegetables from Morocco and Spain due to climatic vagaries.

“Difficult weather conditions in southern Europe and North Africa have disrupted the harvest of some fruit and vegetables,” said Andrew Opie, director of food and sustainability at the British Retail Consortium, inviting supermarkets British companies to turn to other suppliers to guarantee the availability of products, pending a return to normal in the situation which “might last a few weeks”.

Tesco and Aldi have limited the sale of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers to three units per person, while Asda has limited the sale of lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower and jars of raspberries to the same number. Morrisons, for its part, has limited the sale of cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce and peppers to two. Spanish exports of fresh fruit and vegetables in 2022 totaled 12 million tons, 10.4% less than in 2021.
