Ukraine has recaptured Klishchiivka, a key village in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday.

Zelensky’s office posted an image on social media that same day, indicating that Ukraine had recaptured this key area that has been key to Ukraine’s counteroffensive in the east.

In the photo, five soldiers hold flags and pose for the camera in front of a church, geolocated by CNN as the Church of the Intercession in the center of town.

“Today I would like to especially recognize the warriors who are slowly recovering the territory of Ukraine in the Bakhmut area,” Zelensky said during his evening speech.

The area southwest of Bakhmut has been a focus of Ukraine’s counteroffensive in the east all summer, and Zelensky will be keen to highlight this apparent success when he meets with world leaders, including US President Joe Biden. on his upcoming trip to the United States this week for the United Nations General Assembly.

In a separate video also filmed in front of the church, one of a group of six united soldiers declares that the liberation of Klishchiivka is complete.

Throughout the short clip you can hear the sound of artillery explosions, some of which sound no more than 500 meters away, which the soldier seems to acknowledge, saying: “the enemy does not cease in its attempts to return to capture [la aldea], using all his strength. But we remain firm and confident.”

The video shows that the church suffered severe damage during months of fighting, including the loss of its green dome.

The announcement that Klishchiivka was recaptured comes two days after Ukrainian forces reclaimed Andriivka, a small village to the south.

With the summer counteroffensive now in its fourth month, Ukraine has come under increasing pressure to convince key Western partners that Russian forces can be repelled.
