Ukraine would rename Russia, but the Russians won’t leave it at that

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has instructed the government to consider renaming Russia “To Moscow”, after a petition initiated the renaming of the state.

In his statement on Friday, the president he notedthat about 25 thousand votes were collected, for which “the cultural and historical context of the question, as well as the possible legal consequences of the decision, must be thoroughly studied.”

Commenting on the move, the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Marija Zakharova, stated that all “another attempt to turn Ukraine into an anti-Russian country”.

According to the author of the petition submitted at the end of November 2022, the name “Russia” is often confused with the term “Russian”, but Ukrainian nationalists completely despise the idea that there is any historical connection between the two. According to his claim, Moscow appeared in European and Asian languages until the 19th century. century, and Russia has existed for only 301 years, for which they demand that the Russian Federation be renamed “To Moscow”.

Incidentally, the Ukrainian authorities have recently initiated several actions in the framework of which they targeted thousands of place names that they believed could be linked to Russia or the Soviet Union. Last year, for example, nearly a hundred streets were renamed because of the war, and the new names commemorate heroes who fought for the independence of the state.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev responded to the initiative on his Telegram channel:

“What can I say… What is our answer? We will not rename Ukraine to Hoholjandia or Malorossiya, it will be called the Pig Bandera Empire”written by.
