(CNN) Ukraine’s self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic has imposed a curfew and begun censoring communications. Russian state media reported.
The leader of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Denis Pushilin, has signed a decree imposing a curfew on weekdays from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m., Russia’s state-run TASS news agency reported. The curfew will begin on the 25th.
Some officials and civil servants, such as repair workers and those overseeing the supply of food and other essentials, are not subject to the curfew. Police, security forces and people with special passes will also be allowed to move during curfew hours.
According to TASS, Pushilin signed the law on the 18th of this month, but it came into force on the 24th.
According to TASS, a new law has also been added that imposes military censorship on mail, internet communications and telephone conversations.
Under this law, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) and the Ministry of Information of the Donetsk People’s Republic will carry out censorship.
Local officials have described the move as an effort to counter enemy saboteurs and scouts.
War began in 2014 when Russian-backed rebels seized government buildings in a town in eastern Ukraine. After heavy fighting, parts of Ukraine’s Luhansk and Donetsk regions came under the control of Russian-backed separatist forces.
