Ukraine’s NATO Accession Process: Key Updates, Challenges, and Geopolitical Implications

According to US President Joe Biden, Ukraine cannot hope for preferential treatment in its efforts to join NATO. The country must meet all the criteria necessary for accession, he said today. “So we’re not going to make it easy.”

For some time now, Ukraine has been urging its Western supporters to join the military alliance more closely and at a later date. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had actually hoped that his country would receive an official invitation to join at the military alliance’s summit in Lithuania in July.

USA and Germany put the brakes on

However, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg recently rejected these efforts: “We will not discuss an invitation at the Vilnius summit,” he said in Brussels after a meeting of defense ministers. Instead, a new NATO-Ukraine Council is to be set up, which is to meet for the first time in Vilnius with Selenskyj.

The USA and Germany are currently opposed to an invitation for Ukraine to join. Irrespective of a possible accession, the summit in Lithuania on July 11th and 12th is to discuss further military support in the fight against Russian troops.
