KIEV, July 7 (Xinhua) — NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Friday that the NATO summit in Vilnius will bring Ukraine closer to the alliance, according to the Ukrainian state-run news agency Ukrinform.

“I look forward to our leaders reaffirming that Ukraine will become a member of NATO, and agreeing on how to bring Ukraine closer to achieving its goal,” Stoltenberg said.

He expressed his belief that the allies will agree at the summit on a three-component aid package for Ukraine.

Stoltenberg said the package would include providing a multi-year assistance program to Ukraine, developing economic relations through the formation of the NATO-Ukraine Council, and reaffirming that Ukraine will become a member of NATO.

And NATO granted Ukraine the status of “partner of enhanced opportunities” for membership in the alliance in 2020.

The NATO summit is scheduled to take place on July 11-12 in Vilnius, Lithuania.
