According to the US government, the Ukrainian armed forces have made “significant progress” in their counter-offensive in the southern Zaporizhia region in the past 72 hours. National Security Council communications director John Kirby said in Washington today.
“That’s not to say they aren’t aware they still have some tough battles ahead as they try to push further south,” he added.
Ukraine has been waging a counteroffensive since early summer, but is making slow progress. In the past few days, however, the Ukrainian army had reported successes in its attacks on the heavily fortified Russian defense lines in the south.
The goal is to advance to the Sea of Azov, about 80 kilometers away, and thus cut off the land connection to the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which Russia has annexed.
