EU Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski said on Tuesday it was necessary to extend “at least” until the end of October the restrictions imposed by five EU states on the import of Ukrainian cereals, despite opposition of Kiev and resistance from part of the Twenty-Seven.

While the lifting of customs duties in May 2022 boosted the influx of Ukrainian agricultural products into the EU, several neighboring countries (Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria) unilaterally banned the import of grain from Ukraine in mid-April. Ukraine faced with the saturation of silos on their territory and the collapse of local prices.

“It is necessary to extend (these restrictions) at least until the end of October, and ideally until the end of the year, following the harvest, otherwise we will have a huge problem,” Janusz Wojciechowski told AFP. from a meeting of EU agriculture ministers. However, he clarified that the Commission had not adopted its position.
