Ukrainian authorities reported modest territorial gains around the city of Bakhmut on Monday morning, as well as Russian attacks on settlements in the Zaporizhia region.
Over the past week, the Ukrainian Defense Forces liberated two square kilometers of territory in the Bakhmut sector, bringing the total area liberated in that area, since the start of the Ukrainian counter-offensive early last month, to 37 km, it said. Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar during a live broadcast on Monday
He added that Ukrainian troops are conducting successful offensives in areas south of the city of Bakhmut.
Maliar also said that Russia “continues to focus its main efforts in the Kupyansk, Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Mariinka directions, and heavy fighting continues,” reporting “more than 170 battles” in those areas.
He said Russia failed in an attempt to drive Ukrainian troops out of the Serebryansky Forest in the Lyman sector, while Ukrainian defense forces were “effectively holding back enemy troops” in the Kupyansk sector.
“In the Avdiivka and Mariinka directions, the enemy focused its main efforts on conducting offensive operations to establish full control over Mariinka and encircle Avdiivka, but was unsuccessful,” Maliar added.
He said the Ukrainian Defense Forces liberated Staromaiorske, in the Donetsk region, “under heavy fire from aviation and artillery.” while they have been “successful and are consolidating their positions” in the Mala Tokmachka and Robotyne areas of the Zaporizhia region.
“[Desde el inicio de la contraofensiva] the released area amounts to 204.7 square kilometers. It has increased by 12.6 square kilometers in the week”, concluded Maliar.
