Marriages of convenience have proliferated recently. Women in conflict zones or desirous of a better life are able to marry their sponsors to obtain nationality.
That is the theme of “Valeria comes to get married” by Michal Vinik, which is part of the LXXV International Film Festival.
According to the director’s own script, Christina (Lena Fraifeld) has emigrated to Israel to marry the surly Yaakov (Zada Daniel).
She wants to share “her fortune” with her younger sister Valeria (Dasha Tvoronovich) and manages to get her husband to find Eitan (Avraham Shalom Levi) as a suitor for a modest five thousand dollars.
But even though she is received with flowers and a cell phone as a gift, Valeria realizes that she is a modern slave who will have to satisfy her master’s whims, and she rebels, provoking the anger of her brother-in-law, who is reluctant to return the money. which he charged.
The director of “Barash” treats the matter with sobriety and some touches of black smoke, as in “Marriage of Convenience” by Peter Weir or in “Russian Roulette” by Jez Butterworth.
Beautiful Ukrainian women are seen as mere commodities forced to endure the whims of their rather repulsive masters.
“Valeria Mithatenet” was awarded at the Haifa Festival and is a recommendable drama.
