Ultimately, Kirby Dach was acquired from (almost) nothing

Marc Bergevin completed several transactions during his years at the helm of the Canadiens. Of the transactions he has rarely lost…

Unfortunately, he lost a big one when he sent Mikhail Sergachev to Tampa Bay in return for Jonathan Drouin, but hey…

Bergevin was the prime contractor for several excellent trades.

Thomas Vanek (and a fifth-round pick) in return for Sebastian Collberg (no NHL game) and a second-round pick (Johnathan Macleod, a player who never signed an NHL contract)…

Jeff Petry for a second-round pick and another fourth-round pick…

Shea Weber in return for PK Subban…

Nick Suzuki. Tomas Tatar and a second-round pick (which ultimately became Mattias Norlinder) for Max Pacioretty…

But probably the best trade of the Bergevin era was this: Danault and a second-round pick (Alexander Romanov) for Dale Weise and Tomas Fleischmann, two guys who only played a few games in Chicago before take the road to Philadelphia in the case of Weise and hang up his skates in the case of Fleischmann. Weise had one point in 15 regular games and another in four playoff games, while Fleichsmann was good at the end of the season (five points in 19 games), but less in the playoffs (no points in four games) with the Blackhawks.

Danault has become the player he is today – coming off a 27-goal, 51-point season at THE – thanks to his time in Montreal, a city he thrilled (and which in turn thrilled him) for just over five years. And Romanov recently reported Kirby Dach.

And Internet user named Costa Rontzocos has gone even further in the shelling of this transaction and its subsequent effects.

How did CH acquire Dale Weise before trading him? By sending Raphaël Diaz to Vancouver. Diaz had signed in Montreal as an unrestricted free agent. He had never been drafted and he was playing in Europe.

Note that Fleischmann had joined the Canadiens as an unrestricted free agent a few months before being traded, after having impressed as a guest (PTO) during training camp if I remember correctly.

In short, yes, Kirby Dach was expensive to acquire this summer… but when we keep the chronology of events and the various past transactions, we come to the conclusion that in the end, the Canadian was able to get his hands on Dach – a third overall pick who could hatch much like Danault did in Montreal – from almost nothing, like. A fourth-round pick sent to New York with Romanov and a third-round pick then sent to Chicago with Dach…

And choices, the Canadian had a ton during the last draft.

What superb staff management! Or asset managementif you prefer… all of this while coming full circle with the organization of the Blackhawks (of Wise/Danault/Fleischmann in Dach).
