The University Of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is expanding its healthcare footprint with the acquisition of Merit Health Madison, the sole hospital serving Canton, Mississippi.The move promises to enhance healthcare accessibility and integration within the region.
The Jackson-based academic medical center finalized the acquisition on May 1, with UMMC Madison immediately commencing operations under its new ownership. This acquisition builds upon a pre-existing relationship dating back to 2019, during which UMMC physicians were already providing services at Merit Health Madison.
A Strategic Expansion For Enhanced Healthcare
Dr. LouAnn Woodward, Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs at UMMC, emphasized the strategic importance of this acquisition. “As Mississippi’s only academic medical center,we must continue to focus on our three-part mission: educating future healthcare providers,conducting impactful research,and delivering accessible,high-quality healthcare,” she stated.
The canton hospital, equipped with 67 licensed beds, will become more closely integrated into UMMC’s academic and healthcare system. Prior to the acquisition, UMMC doctors were already staffing the emergency room at Merit Health madison, indicating a smooth transition and continued service for the community.

Dr. Alan Jones, Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs at UMMC, highlighted the operational advantages of the acquisition. “This is a natural progression of our relationship over the past several years,” he noted. He further explained that differing electronic medical record systems presented operational challenges, necessitating a more unified approach.

Easing Capacity Concerns And Expanding Services
The acquisition of Merit Health Madison is expected to alleviate some of the capacity concerns at UMMC’s main campus in Jackson. The new location, situated approximately 22 miles from Jackson, will operate as a community hospital, similar to UMMC Grenada and UMMC Holmes County.
UMMC Madison will retain privileges for non-UMMC community physicians alongside UMMC providers, ensuring a blend of local expertise and advanced medical capabilities.

UMMC Madison provides a range of essential services, including emergency services, medical-surgical care, ICU, pulmonology, pathology, cardiology, radiology, neurology, nephrology, general surgery, and GI services. Plans are also underway to introduce OB-GYN services at the new facility.
