The United Nations General Assembly has voted 164 to one to adopt the “Correct the Map” resolution, backing the Equal Earth projection to accurately display Africa’s true geographic scale compared to the centuries-old Mercator map. Led by Togo on behalf of the African Group and supported by the African Union, the vote challenges long-standing cartographic distortions that have historically made northern landmasses appear disproportionately massive while shrinking equatorial regions.
Challenging Centuries of Cartographic Distortion
Cartographers, geographers, and international diplomats have pointed out the inherent flaws of the Mercator projection. Developed in 1569 by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator primarily for marine navigation, the map allows sailors to plot straight lines on a constant compass bearing. However, when plastered across classroom walls and digital software, it stretches regions closer to the poles.
Cartographers Tom Patterson, Bernhard Jenny, and Bojan Šavrič designed the Equal Earth projection in 2018 precisely to correct these warped perceptions. Yet, widespread institutional adoption remained elusive until African nations spearheaded a coordinated diplomatic push. Speaking before the United Nations General Assembly, Togo’s Foreign Minister Robert Dussey emphasized that geography influences human psychology. “Maps shape our understanding of the world. They guide education, nourish the imagination, and influence collective perceptions,” Dussey stated. “It’s time for us in Africa to take responsibility to change what we can change ourselves.”
The Diplomatic Fracture at the United Nations
While 164 member states voted in favor of the resolution and six abstained, the United States stood completely alone in opposition. In a post-vote statement, Yaryna Ferencevych, deputy U.S. representative to the U.N. Economic and Social Council, criticized the measure as an ideological distraction. “Resolutions like this, and the ideological agenda they promote, are barnacles on our work here, and the reason this institution is losing its credibility,” Ferencevych stated.

Despite the lone American dissent, the momentum behind equal-area mapping is accelerating outside traditional diplomatic channels. France announced it will also move away from the Mercator projection. Togo intends to overhaul its own school geography curriculum before the end of the year, setting a tangible precedent for how national ministries can operationalize the U.N. vote.
Real-World Impacts on Education and Economic Perceptions
The resolution is non-binding, meaning governments do not face mandatory enforcement penalties, and maritime and aerial navigation will continue relying on the Mercator grid where straight-line compass bearings remain vital. Still, proponents argue the psychological and economic stakes of changing everyday maps are immense.

Supporters from the African Union noted that traditional maps have long understated the continent’s physical expanse, infrastructure needs, and true economic weight. By introducing projections like Equal Earth into international media, digital platforms, and classrooms, institutions can finally display Africa’s actual land mass.
Reaction from the original creators of the Equal Earth map was one of utter astonishment. “Wow. When we created the Equal Earth projection in 2018, we never imagined this,” Tom Patterson wrote on social media.
