“UN Chief Urges Ceasefire in Sudan as Clashes Leave Over 185 Dead”

The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, has called on the belligerents in Sudan to immediately cease hostilities and restore calm in the country.

Guterres’ appeal comes after several days of escalating clashes across Sudan that have left more than 185 people dead.

The UN boss called on rival military factions to protect civilians and respect the country’s international obligations.

“I strongly condemn the upsurge in fighting in Sudan and call on the leaders of the Rapid Support Forces (RAF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) to immediately cease hostilities, restore calm and engage in dialogue to resolve the crisis,” Mr. Guterres said on Tuesday.

Following the deaths of three World Food Program (WFP) staff in the restive Darfur region amid widespread fighting, he called for those responsible to be brought to justice without delay.

“The situation has already resulted in horrific loss of life, including many civilians,” the UN chief said, before delivering the keynote address to a UN forum on financing for development.

He urged all those with influence over the deteriorating situation to push for peace and support efforts to end the violence, restore order and return to the path of transition. .
