The Council also expressed its welcome of the decisions of the Court of Justice aimed at stopping violations of the Israeli occupation and providing protection for the Palestinians.

The Council praised the efforts of South Africa and all efforts calling for the protection of innocent civilians in the Gaza Strip, ensuring the urgent arrival of humanitarian and relief aid to the Strip, preventing further loss of life, avoiding inflaming the situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, and affirming the right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state. Its capital is Jerusalem.

On Friday, the International Court of Justice, the highest court in the United Nations, ordered Israel to take measures to prevent and punish direct incitement to genocide in its war in the Gaza Strip.

The court said: “The State of Israel must take all measures in its power to prevent the commission of all acts within the scope of Article II of the Genocide Convention.”

A large majority of the 17-judge ICJ panel voted in favor of urgent measures covering most of what South Africa had requested, with the exception of directing a halt to Israeli military action in Gaza.
