United Nations High Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths arrived in Jeddah on Sunday for talks on Sudan, a spokeswoman announced.

Spokeswoman Eri Kaneko told “Agence France Presse” that Griffiths “is currently in Jeddah, and the aim of his visit is to discuss humanitarian issues related to Sudan.”

Jeddah hosts representatives of both sides of the conflict in Sudan, the army and the Rapid Support Forces, for talks that the international community hopes will put an end to the fighting that has been going on for 3 weeks.

The talks in Jeddah come within the framework of a Saudi-American initiative, which is the first serious attempt to end the fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, which has turned parts of the capital, Khartoum, into war zones, and caused hundreds of deaths and tens of thousands to flee.

And I heard the sounds of fighting south of Khartoum, on Sunday, in parallel with the talks taking place in Saudi Arabia.

While mediators seek to find a path leading to peace, both sides of the conflict have made it clear that they will only discuss a humanitarian truce, and not negotiate an end to the war.

The commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo (Hamedti), confirmed his group’s participation in the talks, saying that he hoped that it would achieve its desired goal, which is to open a safe passage for civilians.

The United Nations Mine Action Service said that the excessive use of explosive ordnance in combat has increased the danger to civilians, especially children, who may think that these munitions are toys and play with them.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said he will travel to Saudi Arabia early this week for talks with senior officials in the kingdom.
