The United Nations Special Representative for Sudan, Volker Perthes, expressed his optimism on Wednesday regarding the progress of the talks in this country where soldiers and civilians are trying to carry out a political transition started since 2019.
This transition, which follows the overthrow of former President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019, was interrupted on October 25, 2021 by the military who deposed the transitional government then led by a civilian.
Today, the Sudanese actors are in discussions to relaunch this transition which should again be entrusted to a government led by a civilian.
“I was able to attend a number of sessions, meetings and workshops, and I was personally impressed by the level of discussions and the sincerity with which the Sudanese spoke to each other, interacted with each other. (…) It was very result-oriented, and that’s important in this context,” Volker Perthes said yesterday Wednesday in an interview.
The UN diplomat says he is “much more optimistic than a year ago” when Sudanese soldiers and civilians were almost unable to discuss, plunging the country into a veritable imbroglio.
“I think there is a real chance of reaching a political solution, which of course means that a government must be formed very, very soon,” concluded Volker Perthes.
