UN Security Council Vote on Gaza Ceasefire Resolution During Ramadan

The UN Security Council is scheduled to vote on Monday on a resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza during the month of Ramadan.

The vote comes after Russia and China used their veto power against a US-sponsored resolution on Friday, which stipulated the necessity of an “immediate and sustainable ceasefire” in the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The United States warned that the resolution, which is scheduled to be voted on on Monday morning, may harm the negotiations brokered by Washington with Cairo and Doha aimed at stopping hostilities in Gaza, which increases the possibility of the veto being used again, but this time by the Americans.

The resolution, submitted by the ten elected members of the Council, is supported by Russia, China and the Arab Group, which includes 22 countries in the United Nations, according to the Associated Press.

The summary resolution provides for “an immediate humanitarian ceasefire during the month of Ramadan,” demands “the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages,” and stresses the urgent need to protect civilians and deliver humanitarian aid throughout the Gaza Strip.

A statement issued by the Arab Group, on Friday evening, called on all 15 members of the Security Council to “act with unity and urgency” and vote in favor of the resolution “to stop the bloodshed, preserve human lives, and avoid further human suffering and destruction.”

Ramadan began on March 10 and ends on April 9, meaning that if the resolution is approved, the ceasefire will last for only two weeks, although the draft resolution states that the cessation of fighting must lead to a “permanent and sustainable ceasefire.”

The resolution was originally scheduled to be voted on Saturday morning, but sponsors of the vote asked late Friday to postpone it until Monday morning.

Many Security Council members hope that the UN’s most powerful body, charged with maintaining international peace and security, will demand an end to the war.

Since then, the Security Council has adopted two resolutions on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, but neither called for a ceasefire.

More than 32,000 Palestinians were killed in Gaza as a result of the fighting, according to the Ministry of Health in the Strip.
