US anarchist Ted Kaczynski, also known as the Unabomber, was found dead in his prison cell. He was 81 years old.
Kaczynski was found unconscious in his cell around 12.30am on Saturday. He was dead by the time he reached the hospital.
His full name is Theodore John Kaczynski. Kaczynski, a mathematician, was a professor at the University of California. He gave up his career as a teacher to live in harmony with nature. In 1971, he began living in a small wooden cabin in the woods in Montana with no electricity or running water.
Ted was upset that nature was being destroyed. Kaczynski planned the bombings to kill supporters of modern technology. There were 16 bombings between 1978 and 1995. Three people were killed in the attack. 23 people were injured.
In the early days, universities were the target of attacks. Hence he became known as the Unabomber. Although many searches were conducted, he could not be caught. But Kaczynski had a strange need to end the bombing streak. The demand was to publish his essay on Industrialization and its Future in the Washington Post or the New York Times. This was in 1995.
Both newspapers published Kaczynski’s 35,000-word manifesto at the recommendation of the US attorney general and the FBI director. The police approached him through Kaczynski’s brothers, who were suspicious of the ideas in the thesis. Kaczynski was arrested in 1998.
Kaczynski told the court that he would accept any punishment for the crimes committed. He was sentenced to four life terms and 30 years in prison without parole. Kaczynski was previously held in a maximum security prison in Colorado. He was transferred to the Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina in December 2021 due to deteriorating health.
