The members of the UN Security Council condemned “in the strongest terms the heinous terrorist attacks launched in Abu Dhabi last Monday by the Houthi rebels in Yemen, in a statement issued unanimously yesterday,” according to diplomats.
This statement was approved confirming that these bloody attacks on civilians were “committed and adopted by the Houthis”, while the Council was initiating an emergency meeting on these developments. The UAE, a non-permanent member of the council since January 1, requested the closed-door meeting.
The statement, approved by Russia, stated that these attacks resulted in “three civilian deaths and six other civilian injuries.”
The terrorist attack on civilian facilities in the UAE last Monday drew widespread condemnation of the attack and confirmed its support for the UAE in the face of such attacks.
In its statement, the council stressed “the need to hold the perpetrators, masterminds, financiers and planners responsible for these terrorist acts and bring them to justice.” He urged all states, in line with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate extensively with the government of the United Arab Emirates and all relevant authorities in this regard.
Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh, the permanent representative of the UAE to the United Nations, said that the Security Council agreed that the missile capabilities used by the Houthis are a clear threat to the international community.
She added during a press conference, Friday evening in New York, we requested the Security Council meeting after the heinous Houthi attacks against civilians. She added that the Security Council spoke with one voice against the Houthi terrorist attacks, which are considered a threat to the international community, and was clear about the international community’s concern over the Houthi activities, and that the militias must be held accountable for their actions.
The Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations stressed the UAE’s right to defend its people against Houthi attacks, noting that all members of the Security Council, as well as more than 100 countries and international organizations, condemned the Houthi attacks and their violation of international laws. She stressed that there is no doubt about who should be held accountable after the Houthi militia admitted to launching attacks on our country, and our country is able to defend itself against any act outside international law.
The permanent representative of the UAE to the United Nations explained that the Houthi attack threatens not only the lives of the Emiratis, but the lives of every member state of the United Nations, especially since the militias launched ballistic missiles and drones towards our country, with the aim of injuring the largest number of civilians.
She pointed out that the attack on the UAE is an attack on international laws and norms, the future of Yemenis, and the political process there. We have spent years supporting the political process in Yemen, and we will continue this work to ensure the security and safety of Yemenis.
On Tuesday, the UAE submitted a letter to Norway, President of the Security Council for the month of January, requesting a meeting of the Council regarding the Houthi terrorist attacks on Abu Dhabi, which took place last Monday. Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh, Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations, presented the UAE message to the Norwegian Ambassador to the United Nations, Mona Juul, whose country chairs the United Nations Security Council for the month of January. The letter condemned “the Houthis’ targeting of civilians and civilian objects, stressing that it is a flagrant violation of international law.” The UAE called on the Security Council to “unequivocally condemn the Houthi attacks.”
“The UAE strongly condemns the Houthis’ targeting of civilians and civilian objects in flagrant violation of international law,” said Lana Nusseibeh. “This illegal and alarming escalation is another step in the Houthi militia’s efforts towards spreading terrorism and chaos in our region,” she added. “It is yet another attempt by the Houthis, by using capabilities they obtained illegally in defiance of UN sanctions, to threaten international peace and security,” she said.
Before the closed session, the permanent representative of Norway condemned the Houthi attack. The President of the UN Security Council said, on Friday evening, that the situation in Yemen is worrying.
“Cooperation” welcomes the condemnation of the Houthi attack on the UAE
The Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf welcomed the statement of the Security Council. The Secretary-General of the Council, Dr. Nayef Falah Mubarak Al-Hajraf, indicated that the issuance of this statement comes as an affirmation of the importance that the international community attaches to the Yemeni crisis that the Houthi militias have triggered. Al-Hajraf called on the Houthi militias to respond to the calls for a ceasefire, Positive engagement in efforts to resume political consultations between the Yemeni parties without preconditions in order to achieve security and stability for Yemen. Jordan also welcomed the statement of the UN Security Council and affirmed its support for the UAE. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken affirmed his country’s commitment to helping Gulf partners protect their security against Houthi threats. In turn, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the Houthi attack on civilian facilities in the UAE. He added, “The Houthi attack on the UAE is totally unacceptable and a grave mistake.”
